Today we took at moto taxi (here in
Leticia they are much better built that in Iquitos) to Tabatinga, Brazil to
check on the Itaberaba, the boat we will be taking down river tomorrow. We were
more than a little surprised to find that after all the emails back and forth, the boat is no Queen Mary and the
cabin reserved for us had a single queen bed. Sharing a bed seemed like a
little too much at this point so we switched for a room a little bigger that a
closet with bunk beds. It has a bathroom a little smaller than the bedroom.
While looking nothing like the photos that we had seen on the internet, we
concluded that there was not much we could do. Due to the movement of people
for the World Cup, the flights were sold out so we will go forward with the old
plan and ship out down river on the Itaberaba.
As the sun set back in Leticia, we witnessed
an incredible sight. Every evening at 5 pm, thousands and thousands of small
parrots and swallows circle the main plaza here raising a thunderous racket
with their cries. They arrive in waves and settle in for the night on the trees
in the plaza. Tourists and school
children gather to greet them. At about 5 am, they all leave in great waves
returning to the places where they feed during the day.
